FULLY DRAWN UP PLANS These are copies of printed plans, (often previously published as free plans with a magazine, but no longer available) A1 in size, ready to build from, and with all formers, ribs and structural detail drawn out.

01 SOPWITH TABLOID Prototype, rebuilt Prototype and Schneider Trophy versions on one plan

Published originally as a free plan with Flying Scale Models Sep/Oct 2000 and not as accurate as later plans. Very simple build.  36” span, built-up construction, 18-20oz flying weight with geared speed 400 motor.

02 AIRCO/DH2

Published as a free plan in FSM Jan/Feb 2001 and offered as a laser-cut kit in 2002. Built by Frank Jaerschky (the one on the right) in an RC Groups thread and upgraded to brushless power, CF tail booms, ailerons and functional rigging, his model has hundreds of flights in the logbook.

Span 38” A simple build apart from the tail booms.on the original.

04 SOPWITH GORDON-BENNETT RACER

Researched, designed and drawn from the only existing pictures of the plane, and published in FSM in Apr 2002. Features a lighter structure than the Tabloid, and a scale wing section with wing-warping shown on the plan.

36” span, built-up construction, 16oz flying weight with geared speed 400 motor.

05 SOPWITH BEE

Researched, designed and drawn from a few photographs and published as a free plan in FSM. Revised later and a much more accurate 1/8th scale drawing is available.

06 SOPWITH SPARROW/SLTBP

Researched, designed and drawn from a few photographs and published in RCMF. The plan includes details of the version built by Basil Watson in Australia, post-war versions and the pilotless flying bomb radio-controlled experiment.

08 HOWARD-WRIGHT MONOPLANE

A model of the plane TOM Sopwith learned to fly in. Researched, designed and drawn from a few photographs. A superb flyer indoors or out: delicate construction. A massive  120” span version was built by Phil Guy of the LMA.

09 ROSSITEN-MOTOR AS

Developed from a plan in the “Aeromodeller Annual” for 1957, this graceful 48” span model of a 1930’s German motor-glider has also been enlarged to 6’ span with scale ailerons and less dihedral. Although designed as an indoor model, it has more flying time outdoors.

10 SOPWITH SS3

Researched, designed and drawn from a few photographs and published in FSM. The original was a development of the Tabloid for the RNAS and the plan includes details of all the SS3s produced. Designed for Falcon RC gear.

11 SUPERMARINE WALRUS

This plan was a joint effort between me and Trevor Hewson and the two models often pottered around various indoor halls in loose formation. The camo one flew aff water (once)  Construction slightly complicated by internal elevator horn.

12 SOPWITH SCHNEIDER AND HIGH SPEED

Researched, designed and drawn from photographs and published in AMI. The High Speed was converted from the Schneider Trophy winner specifically for racing. The plan includes details of the three development versions of the Trophy aircraft as well as the landplane racer. Designed for Falcon RC gear.

24” span, built-up very light construction using “no-cal” wings, with 1mm depron alternative, 2oz flying weight

14 AUSTER MK IV

 

 

 

15 BOMBARDIER CL-415 SUPER SCOOPER

A 72” span fully water-capable flying boat for twin electric power. All-balsa lightweight construction with optional flaps and scale wing section. Huge presence in the air and not a difficult build.

Span 72”, built up construction, about 3.5lbs flying weight with 3 x 3700 Lipoly cells

BOMBARDIER CL-215 and CL-415 SCOOPER

A smaller depron version of the Scooper and Super Scooper. Takes off water and grass with ease. Originally designed to dismantle into 5 large pieces to fit into an airline carry-on case. Both versions shown on the plan

X01 BRISTOL BOMBAY

My very first own-design scale model, for 2 x direct drive SP 300 motors and aileron and elevator controls. The model  is not a beginner’s build but has lots of wing area and flies (flew) very well indeed.

X03 SOPWITH PUP

A classic aircraft modelled for indoor flight, but fitted with floats as an experiment. Has more flights off water than off land

X04 WESTLAND WELKIN

A trial build to see what was possible in depron. The plan was enlarged by Trevor Hewson to 62” span for brushless electric power and all-bala construction.

X05 SOPWITH BEE AND TADPOLE

Sopwith’s jaunty little micro-fighter at Peanut scale with the option of the Tadpole version (longer nose, tiny scale prop). The drawings have been much revised since the earlier Bee and are presented ready to publish

X06 WESTLAND WIZARD AND “WIZARD MK IV”

The Wizard Mk 1 is 36” span version of the elegant Westland attempt to provide a Hawker Fury for the RAF in 1929. The “Mk IV” is a steampunk vision of how it might have been developed at the end of its production in 1935.
